Hemoptysis is a common presenting complaint in patients with pulmonary disease. In the past, the diagnosis and management of hemoptysis has been frequently dependent on indirect means of observation. The development of transnasal fiberoptic bronchoscopy has provided an entirely new approach to the evaluation of hemoptysis. The concurrent application of a new technique of systematic segmental lavage has allowed an increased diagnostic accuracy in the patient with hemoptysis, as demonstrated by the localization and visualization of the bleeding in the majority of patients in this prospective study.
